Abstract
Sustainable behavior is a critical component of environmental protection and resource use. Sustainable behavior has generally been addressed in terms of factors at the level of corporate strategies and organizational policies, but it is also influenced by a number of psychological factors that have emerged as important driving forces. Psychological ownership and green passion are important psychological factors that drive individuals towards sustainable behavior. Psychological ownership refers to a mental state in which individuals feel a sense of ownership over an object, organization or goal. In the context of sustainability, when individuals develop a sense of ownership over natural resources, they tend to act responsibly towards their conservation. Green passion refers to a positive emotion that results in an individual's willingness to engage in pro-environmental behavior. This encourages environmentally friendly attitudes and behaviors. Individuals with high green passion are interested in sustainable consumption, advocacy and environmental activism. The synergy between psychological ownership and green passion is necessary for sustainable behavior to be internalized and long-lasting. While psychological ownership instills a sense of responsibility that leads to protective actions, green passion fuels intrinsic motivation and makes sustainability an integral part of an individual’s identity. It can be argued that this interaction, by nurturing both psychological ownership and green passion in individuals and communities, can significantly increase environmentally friendly behaviors. This study theoretically examined the relationship between psychological ownership and green passion as psychological factors and sustainable behavior.
