Political Influence on Cryptocurrency Markets: The Case of Trump-Related Meme Coins
Political Influence on Cryptocurrency Markets: The Case of Trump-Related Meme Coins

Abstract

With the emergence of meme coins—digital assets shaped by internet culture and comedy—the cryptocurrency ecosystem has undergone substantial change. These altcoins, often fueled by community engagement, serve purposes ranging from peer-to-peer transactions to speculative investments. Social media trends and celebrity endorsements have propelled meme coins into the mainstream, blurring the lines between finance and popular culture. Recently, the intersection of politics and cryptocurrencies has gained attention, particularly with the issuance of meme coins themed around political figures like Donald Trump. This study explores how Trump’s involvement has influenced the cryptocurrency market, focusing on the interplay between political branding, social media activity, and investor sentiment. By analyzing market data, social media trends, and sentiment analysis, we find a strong correlation between Twitter mentions of “$trump” and TRUMP coin price fluctuations, suggesting that online discussions significantly impact market dynamics. However, Twitter reach—how widely these discussions spread—shows a weaker correlation with price, indicating that engagement levels rather than visibility drive price movements. These findings highlight how political figures can leverage digital assets for branding, fundraising, and influence, raising ethical and regulatory concerns regarding misinformation and market manipulation. As political narratives increasingly shape cryptocurrency markets, understanding this evolving landscape is crucial for investors, regulators, and policymakers. This study contributes to the limited academic literature on the intersection of politics, digital culture, and financial markets, underscoring the need for further research on the broader implications of politically driven cryptocurrencies.
